What Is Bonding & How Does It Work?

Generally speaking, the most visible teeth, the ones located in the front of your mouth, are those that are most frequently bonded or reshaped. There are several reshaping methods, and your personal circumstances and preferred results will dictate which method is recommended for you.

Two common methods performed at Luminous Smiles include:

  • Bonding
  • Contouring or reshaping

Bonding is a method that is most often used when additional material is required to achieve the shape and look you desire. A bonding agent is used to fix and fill in any gaps or chips. This is also an excellent option to use when looking to improve the color of your teeth.

Contouring is a process by which your natural teeth are reshaped using a drill or a laser. The existing enamel is removed, and the new shape is sculpted from your existing teeth. Prior to performing this cosmetic treatment, we will perform an X-ray to ensure that your natural teeth have enough enamel and that you are a good candidate. After the sculpting procedure, your teeth will be polished and sealed.

Caring for Your Bonded or Reshaped Teeth

Much like veneers and other cosmetic procedures, after you’ve had your teeth bonded or reshaped, you must continue to maintain good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing regularly is a must, as are routine dental cleanings and checkups. We also recommend that you avoid bad habits, such as chewing your fingernails.
